Ford Foundation plays an important role by nurturing microfinance organizations that do more than just lend. In the mid-1990s, the Ford Foundation made a planning grant to Vijay Mahajan, present Chairman of BASIX, to create a microfinance institution that would serve the rural poor. Ford also made two low-interest loans to BASIX to help it get started. The loans are extended for the purpose of providing the necessary capital to make equity investments in BASICS Ltd and loans to the Banking & Finance Companies to enable the Banking and Finance Companies to provide targeted loans to qualified borrowers to promote and support a significant number of sustainable rural livelihoods in India
Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC)
The partnership between BASIX and the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) dates back to 1992 when Vijay Mahajan and his associates conducted a nationwide Study of the Rural non-Farm Sector. The SDC conceptually and financially supported the BASIX group right from its inception in 1996.
After 5 years of BASIX working on promoting the livelihoods of the poor, the SDC supported BASIX in undertaking a series of exercises aimed both at self-reflection and on its future. This exercise, Organizational Learning and Evolution (OLE), helped articulate the BASIX Livelihood Triad.
At the end of 10 years of operations, BASIX re-affirmed its faith in the strategy of the Livelihood Triad. In the spirit of the SDC-BASIX partnership, the SDC has helped BASIX set up a fund in order to help BASIX move into the next stage of institutional evolution. This fund is the BASIX – SDC - Livelihood Triad Fund (LTF).
